Rehabilitation and Nutrition for Dysphagia in the Elderly
Cha Dong-Yeon

Abstract
The consequences of dysphagia vary from social isolation to physical discomfort, and to life-threatening condition. Aspiration may lead to pneumonitis, pneumonia, exacerbation of lung disease, or even asphyxia and death. Swallowing rehabilitation is an effective approach to increase safe oral intake and reduced pneumonia rate. This includes postural adjustment, food modification, exercise-based rehabilitation, and neumomuscular stimulation. Adequate nutrition and hydration can be achieved with correct intake for the individual¡¯s needs and if a safe and effective method of intake cannot be determined. We reviewed the articles to find how to protect the airway, and to supply adequate nutrition for elderly.
